7 Common Mistakes to Avoid in the Irish Theory Test
The mistakes that cost people a pass in the Irish driver theory test, from misreading NOT questions to mixing up sign shapes. Plus how our question bank is split.
The Irish theory test asks for 35 correct answers out of 40. With only five mistakes allowed, small slips add up fast.
These are seven mistakes worth avoiding, and what to do instead.
How our question bank is split
To see where the effort goes, here is how the 803 practice questions in TheoryPass divide across our five study areas.
| Study area | Questions | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Rules of the road and legal matters | 364 | 45% |
| Managing risk | 207 | 26% |
| Technical matters | 100 | 12% |
| Control of the vehicle | 80 | 10% |
| Safe and socially responsible driving | 52 | 7% |
These are counts from our own bank. They describe what we practise, and they do not show how the real test weights each area.
Mistake 1: Rushing through questions
You have 45 minutes for 40 questions, a little over a minute each. That is enough time to read every question fully.
Look for words like NOT, EXCEPT and ALWAYS. One word can flip the correct answer.
Mistake 2: Mixing up sign shapes
Irish signs use shape and colour to tell you what kind of sign you are looking at.
| Sign type | Shape and colour | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Regulatory | Mostly circular, red border | Gives an order |
| Warning | Yellow diamond | Warns of a hazard |
| Information | Rectangle | Gives directions and distances |
Signs from other countries can mislead you. Warning signs elsewhere are often triangles. In Ireland they are yellow diamonds.
Mistake 3: Skipping the Rules of the Road
Practice questions show you what gets asked. The Rules of the Road explains why.
Read the relevant section whenever an explanation surprises you. Understanding the reason helps with questions you have never seen.
Mistake 4: Memorising answers instead of rules
Memorised answers fail when a question is worded differently. Ask yourself what the safe action is, then pick the option that matches.
Mistake 5: Getting stuck on one question
Spending three minutes on one hard question costs time you need later. Choose your best answer and keep moving.
Mistake 6: Never practising under test conditions
Answering questions one at a time is different from sitting 40 in a row against a clock. Do full mock tests: 40 questions, 45 minutes, no breaks.
Book when you score 35 or more consistently, ideally with a couple of answers to spare.
Mistake 7: Avoiding your weakest area
Rules of the road and legal matters make up almost half of our bank, so it gets most of the attention. Smaller areas still cost points.
Technical matters and control of the vehicle together are over a fifth of our questions. Topics like tyres, brakes and lights are easy to neglect.
If you do fail
There is no limit on attempts. Your on-screen score report shows how you did by area, so you know where to focus.
theorytest.ie advises waiting at least 3 complete business days before resitting. A recount costs €15 within 10 days.
