Passing the Irish driver theory test first time saves you money and weeks of waiting. Each attempt costs €45, and the pass mark is high: 35 correct out of 40.

These ten habits give you the best chance.

1. Know the numbers before you start

Item Value
Questions 40
Time 45 minutes
Pass mark 35 correct (87.5%)
Fee €45
Certificate valid for 2 years

Five wrong answers is your whole margin. Plan your study around that.

2. Read the Rules of the Road actively

The RSA’s Rules of the Road is free to download. Read it with a question in mind: why does this rule exist?

Rules you understand are easier to apply when a question is worded in an unfamiliar way.

3. Practise a little every day

Short daily sessions beat weekend marathons. Twenty to thirty minutes a day keeps rules fresh and builds speed.

On TheoryPass, a free account gives you 40 questions a day, enough for one full test’s worth of practice.

4. Understand every wrong answer

When you miss a question, read the explanation and work out why the right answer is right. Then work out why your answer was wrong.

Every TheoryPass question has a short explanation for this reason.

5. Track your weak areas

We group our questions into five study areas:

  1. Rules of the road and legal matters
  2. Managing risk
  3. Technical matters
  4. Control of the vehicle
  5. Safe and socially responsible driving

Your score report on test day also breaks results down by area. Find your weakest one early and give it extra time.

6. Take full mock tests under real conditions

Sit full mock tests: 40 questions, 45 minutes, no pausing. This builds stamina and shows how your timing holds up.

Aim to score 36 or more consistently before you book. That gives you a small buffer for nerves.

7. Learn road signs by shape and colour

Irish signs follow a system. Regulatory signs are mostly circular with a red border. Warning signs are yellow diamonds. Information signs are rectangles.

Knowing the system helps you read a sign you have not memorised.

8. Space out your study

Your memory holds information better with breaks. Try 25 minutes of focused study and a 5-minute break.

Revisit yesterday’s mistakes at the start of each session.

9. Get test day right

  1. Arrive 30 minutes before your test time for check-in.
  2. Bring a hard-copy photo ID. Photos and photocopies are not accepted.
  3. Make sure your name matches your booking exactly.
  4. Sleep well the night before and keep the morning light.
  5. Read each question fully. Watch for NOT and EXCEPT.

Your result appears on screen at the end. More detail in our test day guide.

10. Use your own language if it helps

Since 1 December 2025 the car and bike test has voiceovers in 21 languages, including Brazilian Portuguese. The on-screen text stays in English.

If English is not your first language, choose a voiceover when you book and practise the same way. See theory test languages.

If it does not go to plan

There is no limit on attempts. theorytest.ie advises waiting at least 3 complete business days before you resit. Use the score report to target your next round of study.
