Below are the other theory test charges, then the rest of the licence process.

Where a figure says “check on the day”, we could not open the official page directly or found conflicting versions.

What failing costs

There is no limit on attempts. Each new attempt is a new booking with a new fee.

Attempts to pass Theory test spend
1 €45
2 €90
3 €135

Your certificate is valid for 2 years from the test date. If it expires before you apply for a learner permit, you pay again.

Ways to lose your €45

  1. Booking with a non-Irish address. You will not be allowed to sit the test.
  2. A name that does not match your ID. Spelling must match exactly.
  3. Wrong or missing ID. Only hard copies are accepted. Photos and photocopies are refused.
  4. Refusing the ID scan at check-in.

The full licence path

The theory test is the first fee of several.

Step Cost Status
Theory test €45 Confirmed
Learner permit (first or renewal) €45 Check on the day with the NDLS
Eyesight report Set by the optometrist or doctor Varies
Essential Driver Training (EDT) No set price; each instructor sets their own 12 lessons, or 6 for full licence holders from non-exchange countries
Driving test, car (category B) €85 Check on the day with the RSA
Full licence Not confirmed Check with the NDLS

Learner permit: the NDLS fee table shows €45, in force since 1 January 2025. An older Citizens Information page still showed €35, so confirm before you pay.

Driving test: Citizens Information lists €85 for category B. We could not open the RSA fee page to confirm it.

From 1 November 2026: a new hidden cost

Under the new learner permit rules, some learners will need to sit the theory test again. That means another €45.

You must resit if any of these apply:

  • You apply for a 3rd or 4th permit without a driving test in the previous 2 years.
  • You have already held 4 permits.
  • Your permit expired 2 or more years ago.

Read the rule changes or try the resit checker.

How to keep costs down

  1. Pass first time. Practise until you score 35 or more out of 40 consistently.
  2. Reschedule early if you must. Seven calendar days or more is free.
  3. Bring the right ID and book with your name exactly as it appears on it.
  4. Book your driving test before your 2nd permit runs out. It protects you from a resit.

Study costs

Study material is optional. TheoryPass gives you 40 free questions a day, and paid plans are on the pricing page. Try the free mock test first.

Practise in the format of the real test

40 questions, 45 minutes, 35 correct to pass. Practise until it feels routine.

Free: 40 questions a day with an account.
