Question 1 of 10
What should a driver do if the vehicle's windows and mirrors are covered in ice?
Explanation: Make sure all the windows and mirrors are completely clear of ice so that the driver can safely observe road and traffic conditions all around. This is especially important when driving in slippery conditions. It is good practice to carry a can of de-icer in the vehicle and if possible to fill the washer reservoir with a de-icing agent.
Question 2 of 10
What should the driver do to secure the vehicle when changing a front nearside (left-hand side) wheel?
Explanation: If a driver has to change a front nearside (left-hand side) wheel, make sure to do it in a safe place on level ground. Take care, wear high visibility vest/jacket, use a warning triangle and hazard warning lights as appropriate. The vehicle should be secured by applying the parking brake (hand brake), switching off the engine, engaging a low gear and using a wheel chock if necessary. If unfamiliar with how to change a wheel seek assistance from a competent person.
Question 3 of 10
When should a driver use the vehicle side lights?
Explanation: When leaving a vehicle on an unlit public road at night this creates a potential danger for other road users. Drivers should therefore leave side/parking lights on, so that the vehicle can be seen by other road users. Drivers should not leave headlights on when parked as this may cause other road users to become disoriented.
Question 4 of 10
When should signals (for example, with indicators) be given to other road users?
Explanation: Giving signals is a way of telling other road users what you intend to do. So, you should signal properly before moving off, turning right or left, changing lanes, overtaking, slowing down or stopping. Signal clearly and in good time, and keep in mind that giving a signal does not give you the right of way.
Question 5 of 10
What should a driver do to secure the vehicle before leaving it?
Explanation: Before you leave your vehicle, apply the parking brake and switch off the ignition. Check to make sure that you can open the door safely without endangering others, and alight when it is safe to do so.
Question 6 of 10
When driving at night, when must a driver dip the vehicle's full headlights?
Explanation: When driving at night you should dip your headlights when you meet oncoming vehicles so that you do not dazzle them. And you should also dip your headlights when you are driving behind another vehicle so the driver is not dazzled by your lights in their mirror.
Question 7 of 10
What should a driver do if dazzled by headlights reflecting in the rear-view mirror of their car?
Explanation: If a driver is being dazzled by the lights of following traffic, they should adjust their rear-view mirror to the night driving mode. This will allow them to concentrate on the road ahead and not be distracted by lights from following traffic.
Question 8 of 10
What is meant by the term jack-knifing?
Explanation: Towing a trailer or caravan dramatically reduces the stability of the towing vehicle. If a driver brakes sharply or slows down quickly, the trailer may pivot around the tow hitch coupling, causing both vehicles to go off course, and possibly overturn.
Question 9 of 10
How would hydraulic power steering be affected if an engine stalled in slow-moving traffic?
Explanation: Hydraulic power steering is operated by a pump which is driven by the engine. If the engine stalls, the pump stops working, and the steering becomes heavy and requires much more effort to turn.
Question 10 of 10
When should rear fog lights be used?
Explanation: A driver must only use rear fog lights in dense fog or falling snow. Using fog lights in normal road and weather conditions can dazzle or blind following motorists. Also, fog lights may make brake lights harder to see.
